WHAT A DOMAIN NAME IS
The domain name is the heart of a web address. It is comprised of a unique name, a "dot," and a top-level extension ("com ," "net ," "org," etc.). When you have access to a domain name, you may use it as a web address or as the part of your e-mail address that immediately follows the @ sign.
Anyone may "rent" a domain name. All you need to do is to register it before somebody else does. If you would like a domain name of your own, we can register it for you at a rate that is so inexpensive that it might surprise you--visits the Domains page , which also includes a utility that you may use to determine whether a given name has already been registered.

Domain Name FAQ
- Can I have a web site without registering a domain name?
- Yes. You may set up a "CNAME" (canonical name) account as an optional feature of an FTP account. If your account name is "jsmith," for example, you can have your choice of jsmith.lvha.net or jsmith.lucasvalley.net.
- I already have a domain name. Can I move it to my Lucas Valley Cable account?
- Yes. We can set our server to support your custom domain name for both web and email (there is a set-up charge for doing this). But the actual move of the domain is something that you must do yourself by dealing with the company (that is, the "domain name registrar") with whom you arranged to obtain the domain name. (We can't do this step for you as domain name registrars will not accept instructions from anyone but the individual to whom a domain is registered).
- Domain name hosting services maintain a database that contains contact, account, and technical information on each domain name. You may view this by visiting the domain name utility on our Domains Page. To move your domain to our server, you should change the technical contact and name server entries as follows:
| Name Server: | ns1.secure.net (192.220.124.10) |
| Name Server: | ns2.secure.net (192.220.125.10) |
- When you contact your domain name registrar, follow the instructions they give you carefully. You will probably fill out an e-mail template to request the above changes, but it may also be important that you use the e-mail address that is in their database while corresponding with them. In the event that that email address is no longer valid, you will have to contact their customer service department and use mail or fax in order to authorize them to update your domain name database.
- How can I get Lucas Valley Cable to take over my domain name registration?
- If you would like to take advantage of our low pricing, eliminate being separately billed by your domain name registrar, and be sure that your domain name is automatically renewed when necessary, we can take over your domain registration for you. We do not charge for this service. Simply send a request to hd@lucasvalley.net and we will send you an agreement to sign and initiate the transfer for you. Note: domain registration rules disallow the transfer of registration once you have been billed by your present provider. Either request the change before the expiration date or pay the invoice, wait six months, and then request the change of registration.
- What about the "www" in a web address?
- We normally configure custom domains so that the www may precede the domain name or not. It is easier to omit the www when entering an address into a web browser. However including the www in the web address is probably a good idea when publicizing a web site, as the public will more readily recognize the address as a web site when it is included.
- CNAME web addresses, of course, never have the www. The CNAME itself replaces the www in the address.
- What about e-mail sent to my custom domain?
- We can set up any combination of e-mail addresses that can direct mail to various usernames in your account. You may want "info" mail to go to your "susan" in box and "sales" mail to your "george" in box. You can also specify the in box to which all other mail is directed, or have that mail be automatically deleted. Just give us your instructions when you order your domain and we can set it up for you. You may further refine mail direction by adding rules to your e-mail client if it has that capability.
